A Tale of Two Lives In Memory of James Edwin Spence III "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known." — Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Early Years & Service Born in San Mateo, California on August 12, 1947, Jim developed his early academic discipline at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School under the guidance of the Marianist Brothers (Brothers of Mary). True to form for a tall young man, basketball was his game. Playing on championship teams instilled in him the teamwork and resilience he would soon rely on. Jim answered the call to duty by serving honorably in the United States Navy for four years during the Vietnam War. Stationed as a flight deck crew member on an aircraft carrier, he navigated the non-stop action of naval aviation with courage and distinction. Education & Professional Pursuits Following his naval service, Jim pursued higher education at Chabot College in Hayward, ultimately earning a Master's degree in Communications and securing teaching positions in Fresno, California. His rich tapestry of life experiences—spanning education, military service, and multiple business ventures—provided him with profound insights. Jim used these lessons to mentor students, support his family, and connect deeply with dear friends. As an active and dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he cherished his remarkable 31 years of sobriety. Loves & Fellowships Meeting Virginia (Ginny) at an AA meeting marked the beginning of a 15-year chapter of love, partnership, and shared healing. Their journey proved that a strong marriage between two kindred spirits truly thrives when anchored by a shared sense of humor. Jim possessed a generous heart, always ready to help anyone, anytime, with anything. This innate desire to perform good deeds created countless memories and even more stories to share. Surviving Family & Friends Jim will be deeply missed by many, including: ● His brother and sister-in-law: William & Peggy Spence of Reno, Nevada ● Ginny's family: Nick, Elizabeth, Remi, and Tommy Clark of Salinas, California; and Cynthia, Doug, Dougie, Colt, and Beau of Northern Nevada ● His best pal of 50 years: Ed Cates A Lasting Legacy The tale of Jim’s two lives—before and after becoming part of the Fresno family—was a true blessing. Ginny was continually inspired by his grace, noting how he made her a better person through his devotion as an exceptional husband, parent, grandparent, and loyal friend. His storytelling concluded on June 20, 2026.
