Lois Mae McGuire was born to Sidney and Alice Breda on May 9, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois and passed away January 8, 2020 in Fresno California at the age of 96. She is preceded in death by her husband Paul McGuire and her son-in-law Darel Newman. She is survived by her daughters and spouses Linda Newman, Barbara and John Lippincott and Cheryl (Cherie) and Bill Richards. She is also survived by her grandchildren Shelly, Ryan, Stacy and Brent. In addition, she is survived by 5 great grand children and 1 great great grandchild. Lois grew up in Chicago which she enjoyed and talked about during most of her life. She lived in the Portage Park area and graduated from Schurz High School in 1940. Her young life in Chicago was filled with good times as she enjoyed outings and summer vacations with her sister and cousins at nearby locations. One of her most treasured memories as a young lady in Chicago was going to dances at the Aragon Ballroom. These memories were routinely shared with others throughout her life. After working at a local Chicago bank for a few years Lois took some time off and traveled to Riverside, California to visit her sister and brother-in-law. As this stay was extended Lois decided to take a job at the local Montgomery Wards store where she ended up working in the men’s underwear department. As it happened a young man was in the market for underwear one day and visited the Wards store where he met a charming sales lady name Lois. This young man was her soon to be husband, Paul McGuire. Lois and Paul were married on November 13, 1943 at the Mission Inn in Riverside. After their marriage Paul and Lois lived in various locations while Paul continued to serve in the military. Some of this time was in Chicago where their oldest daughter Linda was born. Shortly after this they relocated back to Riverside where their daughters Barbara and Cheryl were born. In February of 1959 Paul and Lois relocated their family to Fresno where they lived for the rest of their lives. Paul and Lois raised their 3 daughters in a loving home in Fresno. Although Lois was actively involved in her girl’s lives in areas such as serving as room mother and assisting with girl scouts, she always provided a good and stable home life. As her daughters would say, mom was always there for us with cookies and milk when we came home from school. Having 3 young daughters it was always necessary to figure out clothing. Having a lot of knowledge in sewing she taught all of her daughters this art and they each contributed their talents for sewing and clothing. Lois loved the opportunity to always be at home for her daughters. Lois and Paul always loved pets, especially dogs. Their daughters were blessed with this love and always had an assortment of pets while growing up. This love persists today as Lois’ dog Zoey is under the care of Barbara and all the daughters still have and love dogs. Lois lost her loving husband Paul in 1993. She has always suffered for this loss but did manage to get on with her life. The original home was sold and Lois relocated to a condo in Fresno in 1995. Lois did live a fairly independent life for about 10 years in her condo but her daughters Cherie and Barbara were always nearby. One of her most favorite outings during this time was the monthly trip to the Tachi Palace Casino with all of her daughters to play the penny slot machines. She was especially good at Cashman and The Wild Buffaloes. As time went on, Lois became more dependent to the point that it became unsafe for her to continue to live alone. In 2015 Lois relocated to an assisted living home in the Fresno area. This home was near her daughter Cherie’s and son-in-law Bill’s home and they were able to maintain a close eye on her and the care she received. Lois had a good life while in this home and always continued to participate in family activities and trips out with her daughters and their families. Lois’ family feel so very fortunate to have had her in their lives for so long. They treasure their thought that she and Paul are in heaven- dancing. We will always love and miss her.
