Marty Lee West, loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend passed away at the age of 63. All who knew Marty remember his gentle nature and sense of humor. He was admired for his integrity, strength of character and commitment to his family. Marty was born in Fresno, California and lived there his entire life. Growing up he loved spending time in his father's shop and camping with family in Tahoe. He graduated from Bullard High School and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees at Fresno State University. Marty devoted his life to protecting others and spent 38 years in law enforcement with the Fresno and Oakdale Police Departments. He started as a Police Cadet in Fresno at age 19, worked his way up to Captain and in 2007 became the Chief of Police in Oakdale, California before retiring in 2012. Marty was universally respected and trusted by his peers and known for his commitment to excellence. Outside of work Marty was an avid cyclist and enjoyed fishing, creating furniture, playing the guitar and restoring old cars. He treasured spending time with his family, especially his grandsons who were the lights of his life. He was a fan of jazz and country music, he loved instrumental melodies and songs that told stories. Marty was a real jokester, you could always count on him to lighten the mood with his playful sarcastic banter. He was loved by all who knew him and will be sorely missed. Marty may have left our physical world but will never leave our hearts. He leaves behind his loving wife Robbie, daughters Allyson (Michael) and Leanne (Casey), mother Pat, grandsons Colton and Mason, sister Karen (Scott), brother Donnie (Melanie), sister in law Cheryl (Dave), nieces Melissa, Ashley, Lindsey and Lauren, and nephew Ryan as well as other loving family and dear friends. Marty was preceded in death by his beloved father Leroy West in 2001. Friends, loved ones, colleagues and anyone impacted by Marty's life are invited to join family on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 9:00am for a large Celebration of Life at Cross City Church in Fresno, California. Marty was taken by an illness that is devastating to patients, families and communities. His family has requested that if you would like to honor his memory, you make a contribution to The Resiliency Center of the Fresno Police Chaplaincy Department (c/o In Honor of Marty West, 905 N Fulton St, Fresno, CA 93728) which runs a prevention and intervention program for at-risk youth exposed to trauma and works to mitigate the mental health gaps in the community.
