Major Stephen Allen Smith, MD (Ret. US Army) May 11, 1943 - May 3, 2024 With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Major Stephen Allen Smith, MD (Ret. US Army), a devoted father, accomplished physician, decorated veteran, and faithful servant of God. His life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to family, medicine, and faith. Born on May 11, 1943, in Lebanon, Indiana, to William Martin Smith and Eda Sue Campbell, Stephen leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and excellence. He is survived by his 10 children: Matt, Ted, Janny, Mellissa, Becky, Mark, Peter, Katherine, Elizabeth, and Chris, who will deeply miss his guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support. Stephen took great pride in his children's accomplishments and was a constant source of encouragement in their lives. In addition to his children, Stephen is survived by his older sister Jana, stepbrother Joe, stepsisters Marty and Carol, and half-brother Greg. A distinguished alumnus of Hiram College and Indiana University Medical School, Stephen's academic achievements paved the way for a remarkable career in orthopedic medicine. His expertise in sports medicine, spine surgery, and hand surgery improved the lives of countless individuals, earning him a reputation as a skilled and caring physician. Stephen's athletic prowess was evident in his achievement as an Indiana State Wrestling Champion, a testament to his discipline, perseverance, and competitive spirit. His military service was marked by bravery, honor, and dedication, and his contributions to the US Army will always be remembered and cherished. As a devout Christian, Stephen's faith was the foundation of his life, guiding his actions and inspiring his compassion for others. His commitment to his beliefs was a beacon of hope and strength to all who knew him. Throughout his life, Stephen lived and traveled to many different places, including Indiana, Kentucky, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, and Honduras. He enjoyed several road trips across the country and trips to Europe and Russia, with Hawaii being his favorite destination. His many interests included archery, shooting, hunting, scuba diving, running, and working out. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary individual, we take comfort in the memories of his kindness, generosity, and selflessness. His impact on our lives will continue to inspire and motivate us to pursue our passions with purpose and compassion. Rest in peace, Major Stephen Allen Smith, MD.
